I had it tied along the river and the next day it was gone.I think it floated away instead of stolen but think someone untied it and its been a week.It had 1989 20hp merc on it.If someone claims my boat and needs parts and gives the serial # of my motor to a marine shop will he know its my motor and not his.Because you have to use that # to get parts?

Sorry about that, NMM. :(

If you bought the engine new, the serial number is on record as yours. Find it out and report it.

If you live in a state (like Texas) that titles engines, you have the title and can report it gone.

Some states register outboards. Then you would have a registration slip with the SN on it.

If none of the above are true, your engine has been stolen and you will never see it again. That is why so many engines have the plates removed. At one time they were stolen. Even so, a Merc dealer can id it by serial number found elsewhere on the engine.

Good luck. :)
