I made it live! But couldn't bring it back to low idle??

Is that normal, or do I need to adjust them? I replaced the starter solenoid and got it running, then I just had to manually choke it because the electric choke wasn't adjusted correctly. But I had it in high idle, and I could not bring it back down! It revved up to the max rpm and basically freaked me out as I tried to take it back down. It was connected to muffs only, so I was worried it wouldn't get enough water and I didn't want it to stay there too long and overheat. I only waited a few seconds. Do the controls need to be adjusted, or is it normal for a 2 stroke to take a long time to idle back down? If it needs to be adjusted, how do I do that?

I also had to shut it off by choking the carb with my hand, which sent gasoline pouring out of the carb since it was at a high rpm at the time. I think there's an issue with the ignition kill wire being placed incorrectly. Any tips?

I think to get the best answer here is to list the outboard motor and year you have. A lot of things are different from one motor to another.

Anxous to see what Puddle Jumper says as he is very wise

My first thoughts go to timing and throttle linkage adjustment ... but I think just timing alone could not rev to max rmp .. could be wrong but it makes no sense . I would start by looking down the carbs , at the throttle butterfly , working the throttle linkage and be sure they "snap" shut as soon as you release the linkage .

You should get your self a manual to check out your no shut off problem first. That sounds like a possible broken wire in the ignition switch system.

As of the high idle sounds like stuck linkage or a air leek in the engine making a lean run condition.

You were 100% correct, the throttle linkage is the issue. Is there supposed to be a return spring? It doesn't have one and the throttle adjustment does not return to low idle. I had to push the cam up by hand and then it would return to a low idle. Also, how far forwards is the throttle adjustment supposed to reach when I am giving it full throttle? There's two notches, and I assume the first one is full throttle and the lower one is no throttle?

I want to fix the wiring issue too, but can't find any wiring diagrams for the ignition kill switch.
