I want to keep this simple -
I have the rig pictured below-
1987 16' Starcraft with 1987 Johnson 70hp 3cyl
I dont carry much it it except some fishing equipment, ice chest (full of beer :D) & about 300lbs of my wife & me (i'm the 200lb one )
I dont want a speed boat- we fish & enjoy he water, thats it
I'm tottaly lost on the numbers on props (pitch & such) I tryed to just search for a standerd prop for my boat/motor but got all these pitch choices
Can somebody just give me the right numbers to order a prop please?
Thanks :)

We'll assume it has a pad bottom, obviously no jackplate. But the motor is mounted up so there must have been a decent prop on it at one time. Looks like it's mounted all the way up indicating it would like more height.

If I were doing it I'd start with a decent design 19. Maybe an 18 Raker or Turbo Lightning Jr. Maybe opt for a manual jackplate and lean towards a 20 Raker or Lightning Jr.

Each of the designs he listed (ie raker, lightning Jr.) are a specific type of prop, each with its own quirks and advantages. The number he listed is the amount of pitch each has, 19 means 19 inches of pitch (use a search funtion to see what this means)

A good 4 blade might be something to consider. However, I'd think that to take full advantage of one a jackplate should be considered also. You probably don't need a hydraulic one (although they're nice), a good manual one like Bob's Machine Shop 4 in 1 convertable would be fine.

Turbo and Stiletto make some really nice props that would suit your needs just fine. Have you tried any prop yet?

Only one i've used is the 3 blade 17 pitch that came on it, I've done a lot of reading & i guess i'll stay with a 3 blade (cost is a big factor) - A 17 pitch will be fine for a good hole shot but a 19 pitch will give me a bit more top end speed--correct? Can't determine if the 19 will get me on plane any quicker tho  Thats one thing i'm really after :)
Thanks for the reply :)

What was the top rpm with the 17 with your average load?

OK, good to know. We might want to verify the tach at this point. It's real simple. Most dealers have a shop tach that clips on a plug wire much like a timing light. Then just take a ride. A 17 could indeed be about the right pitch. Then we just need to decide on style. I'd use something with as much lift as possible. That hull should respond.
