Hey guys, i have disassembled my motors lower unit and i have found that the brass shift rod bushing is nowhere to be found:eek: Does anybody know where i can obtain one, this is a old old motor from 1963 seems kind of unlikely but who knows. I am thinking maybe i will just put it all back together and forget the bushing, the old O ring seems to be in there just fine without a bushing. Didnt seem to leak oil without it either. What do you guys think?

Not sure about your shift rod setup but I just bought a brass bushing for my '76 40 HP Johnson so maybe they do still sell them for yours too. I bought mine from boat.com I think for about $6 dollars, but EBay sells them if you know your part number. You can also google search for the part with the part number. It isn't really a unique part. And I would also buy a new "O" ring as well. I personally would not try running it with replacing the bushing. Water will find its way into the foot...that's a huge NO NO...and very costly too...

Can't say for 100% certain, but here is the part number for every shift rod bushing since 1968 - 2006 for Johnson OB's of all HP's...

#304765 or #0304765

Depending where you purchase it it will cost from %3 dollars to $10 dollars... Hope this fits yours as well... :watermelon:

there seems to two threads going on this motor....unless its two motors? in the other thread, the bushing has been accounted for , and removed.

The shift bushing is replaceable and there is a factory special tool for removing them.

Yes there probably is but you can easily make one to remove it as well. If memory serves me correct a 9/32" rod will slide through the bushing hole where the shift rod fits through. but a 5/16" rod will work to tap it out... This brass bushing comes out from tapping from the top toward the lower foot section. And it holds the "O" ring in the bushing too. And under the brass bushing is a gasket. So tapping the bushing out from the top of the foot section will remove it. But it is not in there losely either. It takes some tapping to remove it. But since he doesn't have any bushing there now, all he has to do it install the "O" ring inside the rod bushing and place the gasket in first and push the brass bushing in...okay tap it in as well. I just changed one myself...
