So thanks to the guys on here guiding me in the right direction, I've found that I have trashed by upper unit. Any suggestions other than eBay (found 2 iffy ones on there)?
I have an 87 OMC cobra sterndrive connected to a 4.3L.

Thanks!

If the upper is trashed then all the metal shavings are in the lower section too.
You also need the correct gear ratio drive for the 4.3
You may want to do the SEI conversion.

Yea, Crowley Marine lists a complete 4.3 reman for $3300 with a 1 yr. warranty + a $150 core charge. You can get an SEI for about 2 grand with shipping with a 3 yr. warranty. I think it'a a no brainer.

I found a used complete cobra sterndrive for $500 cash. If I get it I'm going to pull the upper unit cover off and look at the gears. If I do this, I'll have a spare lower (my current one). Of course I'd need to tear it down and find out if any of the metal shavings messed anything up.

What do you guys think? $500 is a lot easier to let go of than $2-3k...

If u plan on using the lower half of the new one, I would tear it down & look at the condition of the lower gearset. No sense in swapping anything without knowing if the dog clutch, etc. are ok or not. I hear ya on spending 2k on a new drive. I'm in the same boat so to speak. I want to replace my Cobra & do the SEI swap but it just ain't in the budget right now.

Are the gear ratios the same on the used drive?
