I Need Help! 3.0l 181 Impeller

I have just finished doing changing out the head gasket, and manifold gasket on my mercruiser boat. I found out after all that, that the engine is not receving any water!!! I looked in the water intake holes on the foot and found pieces of the impeller! How do I replace this, I would rather do it myself and save money. If someone could please help me! I would to enjoy the summer before going to be teaching! Thank you so much!

It's a 1979 Mercriuser. I am not sure which drive, how do you find that out? It's a very old boat, but it is/was in great shape. I hope you can help me out! Thanks.

well to change the impeller it will cost about $50 for the parts thats the impeller, gaskets ,and housing. you will need to drop the lower unit to change it will take a few hours if you know how to do it.. if not you'r local boat mechanics can do it around $130 .

So I dropped the lower unit today, and I am looking for replacement parts, but I do not know which one to get? I am a little confused, and I can not get the impeller off the drive shaft any clues? Thanks for all your help so far!

Those manuals where nice, but they didn't cover the stern drive. I looked at all 2,000 pages of amazing information, but they didn't cover it. I did fix one problem, I bought Selco's manual and it is nothing compared to the ones here. When it did start talking about the stern drive and said refer to the Stern Drive Manual? Thanks for your continued help.

Bondo gave you 2 different links the first one is for your outdrive, and is for all outdrives from 1978 to 1982.

The impeller is stuck to the drive shaft, I have looked at the manual and it said it should just come off? Any clues as to get it off? Thanks!

hammer and chisel.... split the impeller right down the side... happens all the time.

Thanks for the help, it came off with a little persuasion. I guess now the bottom of the water pump is in tight with the O ring keeping it in place. I am hoping to go tomorrow and buy the pieces. Kind of hard to work on it while playing Mr. Dad with my 1 year old son for the summer! So I hope to have it in the water this weekend...hopefully.

Thanks for everything, I have a couple more questions to ask. I have bought a new base for the oil pump, do I need to by an oil seal for the bottom of it, or do the new ones already come it?? I removed the old oil seal and it looks nothing like this one???
Also I bought the kit and I have extra gaskets and o rings? Am I missing something or is this just a catch all kit that includes all kinds of pieces? Thanks!
