The wires rusted off on mine. I have found some replacements on line but they look just a little different?

Probably doesn't help much but I've got a '99 SX-M drive and I had the same problem - wires fell apart. When I pulled it, it was stamped with Volvo PN 3855074. That number leads absolutely nowhere.....
If yours is a 2 wire sending unit I think PN 3594989 is the correct one. If its a 3 wire, then go with what Don said -3849411

Doesn't matter if it's a 2 or 3 wire sender, either will work.

Thanks for your help, part number 3849411 is the closest I could come up with too. I'll order that one and let everyone know how it goes. Are there any tricks to feeding the new wires? Getting to where the grommet is on the wire looks like it could be a bit tricky. Thanks again!

I presume you have downloaded the manual for the drive from here.

Points I have found that the manual doesn't mention.
From inside the boat.
Remove the raw water intake hose at the transom to give you some room to see and remove the little spring clip that secures the rubber moulded grommet that the wires pass through. Unless you have the engine out or are a contortionist you will find it very difficult to press the grommet out as suggested in the manual. Tie a single overhand knot in the wire as close as you can get to the grommet, if you don't the wires will pull through the rubber. Remove the plug as in the manual i.e. press out the pins.

Move to the outside and give the external wire a hefty straight pull and it will come out of the transom shield. (or it has done with mine on the 6 occasions I have had to do it)
When you install the new one put some silicone grease on the grommet and firmly press it in from the outside and don't drop the spring clip when you are putting it back inside the boat.
It can be done with the Pivot housing in place, but I have found it easier with it removed, your choice.

Re: I need help finding the part number for my trim sending unit please.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. Here is how it went. Part number 3849411 does work on my 2004 Volvo Penta drive unit SX-M. The one that came off of the boat had 2 wires, one black and one white. Part number 3849411 has three wires, white, solid black, and black with a stripe. The directions said to use the white and solid black wires. That made sense so I went for it. The comment about using a piece of string is a great idea, I have used that trick working on aircraft, however I would suggest to all using it when you remove the clip as well as installing it because I dropped it when I removed it. I searched for over an hour and never found it, luckily I had a spare. Tying a knot in the wires worked great. I installed the new sender and no joy, it didn't work. The directions had a check to see if the sender was working by using an ohm meter, it said to look for 600 +/- 25 ohms between the wires, the new one was at 750. I was about to give up and get angry. I tried switching some of the wires around and turns out you have to use both black wires, which works. I used a piece of thread when I installed the grommet clip this time. Getting to everything inside and outside the boat was a bit tricky, I ended up removing the carpeted board in front of the trim motor, it was only held on with 2 screws, which made it a lot easier to get around the engine. I hope this helps someone down the road and thank you again to everyone who helped me.
