I have a 2005 Chaparral with a 3.0 Volvo Penta engine. I recently just noticed when I turn the steering I hear a knocking noise coming from the rear. I also hear this noise when I trim up or down. I have heard to replace U-Joint and Gimbal bearing. I want to make sure before pulling off the outboard if there is anything else it could be besides these two. Thank you in advance for any help.

Gimbal bearing on an out board? That's the 1st time I have heard there is one on an outboard. Maybe, I'm new at this stuff.

Your in the right area. Pull the "outdrive" and inspect the joints and bearing. Place your fingers inside the gimbal bearing and rotate it. The bearing should feel real smooth with no roughness. Move the U joints around and see if they are smooth also.

Most cases the noise is bearing

Yes it is a inboard/outboard I/O. I just spoke about the outboard, since that is where the U-joint and Gimble bearing is located. "Old Ironmaker"

"Alldodge", thank you for the input. The noise came out of the blue. I lubed the gimble bearing through the lubrication port hoping that would help it, but it did not. I am hoping it is just the gimble bearing, that looks pretty easy to replace, the U joints make me a little nervous. I have not pulled the outboard off yet to inspect them. I will let you know what the outcome is. Thank you again.
