I need help with cooling

I have a 1993 50 HP Evinrude model VE50TLETB. It is over heating. I have it off the boat on a stand and with the garden hose to it. The reason the motor is on a stand is because I had to replace the lower piston. It takes a little before water come out and it doesn't come out like it should. I have ordered an impeller for it but my question is this. At the top of the exhaust cover is a small fitting, that nothing is hooked to and a small amount of water comes out. I don't remember removing anything from this fitting and I can not find an extra hose to put on it. I was hopping someone could help me with this.

Hi
Can you post a photo of the fitting?
A picture is worth a thousand words,so they say.

That's the elbow for the overboard indicator, tell-tale or whatever you wish to call it.

That should have a hose running to the floor of the lower cowl and have a flow of water whenever the engine is running to let you know that the water pump is functioning (which it apparently is not).

I'm guessing that it may also be where my water pump pressure gauge on my dash hooked up. Being that hose would still be on the boat, it would be why I can't find an extra hose.

The water pressure gauge was an add on; the tell-tale came with the motor. The hose was 23" long and exited on the starboard side - see #4 on the lower cover diagram and #31 on the Cylinder and Crankcase diagram. You could connect both to the elbow with a tee.

At any rate, that's not what is causing your overheat problem. You might want to check your thermostat housing after the water pump.

also did you pinch the grommet the water tube goes in on the water pump. this would restrict water flow. i have a 93 40 which is same block, will get pic this morning. the tale tell comes off the bottom of the block, the pressure guage came off the top.
