i need help with my shift cable.please help

i have a 96 alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive. ive already removed the bell housing all the bellows and the gimball bearing. Im ready to put it back together but i cant figur out how to get the shifter cable out. i cant get the plastic thing of of the end thats outside of the bell housing. Ive already discoonected it from the engine side and pulled it out as far as i couldand i removed the little set screw from the end of the plastic thing. Please help. I have the manual but it isnt alll that clear.

My experience, very recent.....

you need to make a socket that can go over the long plastic tube (don't matter for removal, just cut it, assuming your putting a new one in). I welded two deep sockets together for the reach and that worked fine.

Unscrew the brass retaining nut, you'll have to spin the cable as well unless you cut that short as well. Pull it though remembering the cable route.
