I am new to boats....and i am looking at buying a 1976 larson 19' open bow with an outboard 90 hp merc motor, and a trailer....the guy is asking $500. my concern is that the hull paint is faded, it needs a new interior and one of the pistons in the motor is blown and the trailer needs new tires....is this a decent price?? is there a chance that the motor is fixable??? just looking for some advice...thanks

i dont have a lot of money, hence me looking at a 1976 larson, lol. i know that the boat was taken care of to an extent. i am a do it yourself kind of guy so i have no problem re-doing the interior and a friend that can paint the hull. so if i were to buy a used motor for it what would be a decent offer for the boat?

It's almost a certainty that a 1976 boat in the condition you describe has rotton wood in the floor, stiffeners, and/or transom. You really need to get somebody that knows what they're doing to look at the boat for you.

Around here, in excellent shape, that would be about a $1,500 rig at the MOST. Even if all the wood is OK, and you do all the work yourself, I don't see how you could avoid spending lots more than it's worth by the time you get it running, even if you ignore the non-essential stuff like interior and paint. $1,000 doesn't go very far when you start buying boat parts.

I think I would save my money. There will always be a better deal around the next corner.
Try to not get fixated on this boat because of it's low price of $500.00

By the sounds of things it will cost plenty more to get it sea worthy and dependable.

Just my two cents..

Taken care of?? Yet the engine is shot, the interior is shot, and the trailer needs work??

Run away, don't even think about it. IMHO

If you'd like to get on the water cheaply, I recommend an aluminum hull with an outboard motor. Less chance of picking up a money pit.
