Hey i am 17 and i bought my first boat, It is a 4.4m / 14.6 foot fiber glass runabout, the brand is Pongrass and it has a old 40 hp Johnson on it. I has the older style cable and pulley steering. I will replace with the new steering systems later on. It has no interior (so i get to customize the interior my self) Ok back to what i need help with. i am going to go pick it up tomorrow, i haven't paid yet (Cash when i pick it up). Now the guy says he repaired the transom 2 months ago. So i need to know what to check for. Like i am going to make a list on what to ask the guy and what to look out for on the boat. So like check the hull, transom, check for soft spots, soft fiber glass.
Yeah so i need a list for what to look out for. If anyone can help me that would be great.
The guy says that the hull is good and solid and there are no cracks. The engine needs work but i am happy to do that.
This is my first boat project and i will make another thread once i get the boat.
Thanks

Re: I need HELP

If i get the boat i am going to do a full restoration. Hopefully not a stringer resto. But more seats, carpet, hull liner, gauges, steering, lights, stereo, wakeboard pole, and other stuff. I will make a new thread in the project section and take lots of pictures and video. When i start the resto.
Thanks
P.s this website is awesome, i found it 2 weeks ago and i am already buying a boat and restoring it. So much info on the forum. And i will need iboats user's advice throughout out this resto.

Re: I need HELP

Make sure the transom was repaired right. Look at as many resto threads here and you'll start to get a feel for what's been done right and what hasn't. You should be able to put some weight on the transom and it doesn't move. Make sure it's "flush" (straight) across with no separation or bowing. Projects are great, but make sure you've spent accordingly. Be sure to post pics when you get her.

Re: I need HELP

Thanks for the info yeah i will post pics, lots of em. The transom is under the plash well in the back so i don't think i will be able to see if it separates. And yeah i think i am spending good money for what i am getting. i live in australia and boats and stuff like this isn't cheap because of the small population. But i found this boat on ebay and the guy said his minimum was $250. I bid on her and got it for $255. He said he wants more but i only have $255 at this moment so he said ok. Its a neat little boat. I know its gonna cost me a good amount because i want to get her looking awesome with 4 speaker stereo, nice paint jobs and all near interior. I am gonna build a "U" shaped bench seat for the back out of ply and fiber glass. I can tell this project is gonna be awesome.

Re: I need HELP

Check the Deck for Soft spots. Check UNDER the boat for any major gouges or cracks in the HULL. Check the sides for the same. ASK him HOW he repaired the Transom. ASK him if he has receipts for the materials he used to repair the transom. DON'T be afraid to PAY less IF you find any DAMAGE that he did not REPORT on the EBAY listing. Just because he wants $250 doesn't mean it's worth it. Check out my thread. I got Boat Motor and Trailer for $250 and I KNOW you are on and ISLAND but still, if It is going to take a lot to fix it up it still is NOT worth a lot. Just cuz you're young you do not have to be taken advantage of. Stand up for yourself mate!!!!
