I have twin Palmer engines with Volvo Penta 270 outdrives. My boat is a 1973 Carter Safari 28 #25. There are no manuals. The engine tags say they were build by Thermo Electron Engine Corp. I sent email to legoman67, but have not rec. reply. I have figured out they are Ford Windsor 351's. any info would be helpful. See attachments. (If I didn't screw them up) Thanks

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... I think yer Right,...

It looks very much like the Volvos of that era,...

I imagine the "Specs" would be the same,...

Re: I need info on my Palmer engines

Hi DIPSHIPS, Sorry I have not seen this before now, didn't realize some one created a separate thread from Legoman's major project on his Safari up in Nanimo, B.C. Anyway I never heard John Carter mention using any Fords other than 302s, the most common was the Chevy 350 block usually with Volvo's additions. Your may be an aftermarket install. If your interested in a little Safari History check out <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Marine_Inc>, Legoman who did the big thread on his Safari unfortunately gave up because of costs. My neighbor still has most of John Carter's files on the Safari business, I will try to check to see if there is any info on Palmer engines.

Re: I need info on my Palmer engines

DIPSHIPS, One thing I forgot to mention, the early Safaries had fiberglass fuel tanks, which can be an issue with modern ethanol fuel blends. So before you think about sinking much money into yours you might want to check what kind of tank you have and its condition. A modern aluminum fuel tank replacement cost me $1500 plus all my labor to get the old one out, and mine was designed for access. with a separate deck cover section The early ones had a completely sealed tank enclosure the only opening was the little cover in the center to the level indicator. Which means break out the Sawzall and cut the deck out. Next thing check the oil in those old 270 outdrives, especially if it has been around saltwater, if it is clear they may have some value, but parts are not cheap for them. Any questions let me know.
