i need more speed!

hi i have a 1974 baja 16 foot speed boat with a 1974 johnson 115 hp outboard. i was wondering if i could get more speed. now i get about 45 on the boats speedometer (im not sure that it works good) but the guy i bought it from said he got 56. does that seem right? anyway how can i get more top speed? i now run 5500 rpm with the cavitation plate about even with the bottem of the boat . i do have power trim. also what is a hydrofoil for an outboard, how much do they cost and what do they do? thanks!

Stop eating for 1 month,run with 1/4 tank of gas and cut the 12 pack back to a 6 pack and that should get the speed up.Charlie

Great rig! You have some room for improvement. There is going to be an article in either (maybe both) Bass & Walleye and/or Trailer Boat Magazine about a Baja and an OMC crossflow V4 that John Tiger Jr. did. Lots of details and test results.<br /><br />I'll try to find out when and let you know. <br /><br />Stay tuned!

thanks! any more advice. i have a 18 pitch stainless steel prop is that good.

Agrre on the hydrofoil, I'd only use it on hard-to plane boats at lower speeds. <br />1st of all, what speedo do you have? Most of the low-end speedo's I've seen has been notoriously unaccurate. Verify your speed with a GPS. <br /><br />Your top rpms seem ok @ 5500, but if the cav. plate is about even with the bottom of the boat, I would raise it, at least 1 hole. <br />See the tread below "motor height - need some advice" for more info. <br />With raising the motor, you get less drag from the lower unit -> more rpms -> allows you to run more prop pitch -> more speed.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet its a major factor with speed - polish the bottom of the boat.<br /><br />Aldo
