Dad was a tinkering/mechanic person. He passed away Jan 2012. Family has asked me to deal with clearing out his shop. The shop is pretty big. Besides the Mercruiser he had 3 Mustang engines, a Chevy big block engine, several heads and cams, all manner of parts and trims. He did classic car restorations as a hobby.

Dad lived on the coast for a while. He has a Mercruiser 165 with the controls, tilt, cables etc that has sat inside his shop for a few years. I have no idea what it is worth. It was running when it was pulled from a boat, but it hasn't been started in a long time (years).
What would be a decent price to ask for it? I've been told it would be an $800-1000 if it was running. Seems a shame to sell it for scrap if someone wanted to rehab it. I put an ad for it on craigslist but I'm not sure what is a realistic price anymore.

I personally wouldn't pay much for a non running motor except for the expectation of rebuilding it. Couple of hundred. Get compression numbers off it and pressure the cooling side to see if there are any cracks and the number would go up... but so would your labor/time on it.

Ok, so $200. Thank you.

I could put a carb kit in a classic Mustang, but it's been too long for me to do any sort of mechanics testing on this engine. I just need it gone from the shop. It won't be used by any of the family. No one has spoken for it.

Dad wanted me to get the shop organized and ready for family to use. He told me to sell off the spare parts and engines but keep the basic tools. When his best friend passed away it took Billy's boys more like 3-4 years to get to the end of his shop. I'm afraid it's going to be a long long haul for me as well. One problem is that being out in the country,, Mom and my sister are paranoid about strangers seeing all the stuff inside and coming back uninvited. We've had some issues with break-in's.

Sorry to hear about your pops.... I am not a 165 guy so maybe hang on a little and get some other opinions on it. They are a very popular engine.

Thank you.
Dad had a pretty solid attitude towards the stage 4 cancer. He said ' I'm 75,gonna die sometimes. At least this way I have a heads up to get things settled the way I want. Better than a stroke/heart attack and leave a mess for your mom.'

Side note for all of you folks.... don't ignore having chronic indigestion/acid reflux... if Dad had insisted the doc keep an eye on that and taken meds regularly he would not have developed esophageal/gastric junction cancer.

Take that Prilosec or whatever the doc says and keep it under control.

pricing and what you can get for it are dependent on geographical location, condition of the motor, and what people are willing to negotiate.

that being stated, welcome to iBoats, and sorry about your father.

well, had the guy say he is okay to gamble 250. I told him it has sat for a long time. Dad said it was running when it was pulled. He will be coming Saturday to pick it up. At least it has a chance to be back in service rather than just scrapped.
