I need to know the timing setting for my engine

I have a 1998 5.7 vortec longblock build using a 1995 Thunderbolt IV ignition, Edelbrock 1409 carb with a cast iron high rise manifold.

I have got the engine running by setting the timing by seat of my pants, it sounds pretty good. I would like to set the actual timing and don't know the correct setting.
Also, is the timing set a idle on this engine, or at a given rpm?

What does your engine cover say? Should be 8 degrees at idle. Then rev it a little to make sure advance is working.
