I need to replace a tired Chevy 305, can a pin drive omc stringer handle 300 horses?

The tired 305 in my boat doesn't have much power in the top end. It costs just as much to have a local shop build me a 250 HP Chevy 350 as it does a 300 HP Chevy 350. The boat says it's designed for 260 HP, but I can't imagine an extra 40 horses is going to make it dangerous.

260 max., but the local shop's rating of 300 is at a much higher RPM than the 4600 you are limited to in your boat.
Ask them what the HP will be at 4600 RPM :)
They'll likely say 250 or so and your drive can deal with that.

It'll make 300 HP in some guy's Chevelle, revving at 5500+. Most engine builder's don't realize that that kind of rpm is not an option in a boat. 4600 is tops for your OMG.

And once you have that conversation, you'll realize it's probably cheaper, quicker, easier, and more reliable to just buy a brand new GM 290HP crate motor which also makes exactly 260HP at 4600.
Pop brass core plugs in it and away you go. 2 pc rear main seal even, which is an absolute necessity for your OMC stringer's coupler.

You don't have to worry about the block's history over the last 30 years with various machining and overbore and crankshaft grinder burns and such...

and compression test the 305.
"no power in the top end" is NOT really a prominent symptom of an engine that needs rebuilding.
maybe it just needs a tune up or a carb cleaning.
