I recently posted a couple of topics with repsect to my 1988 dt65 shifting problem. You helped me alot by telling me how to isolate gearbox/control box issues. Sorry to keep posting, but I am desperate. I have determined that the gears shift fine if done so manually. I have searched the forum high and low for an answer to my problem and no luck. I recently removed the lower unit to replace the water pump and now that its back on the motor, the shift shaft seems to be a bit off the mark for neutral. Whats the procedure for making sure the shift shaft aligns correctly with the position of neutral gear? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't have to unthread any bolts other than the clutch arm bolt which connects to the shift shaft (it lifts it up and pushes it down.the shift cables have a trunion bolt to adjust the shift linkage. i tried numerous positions with respect to adjusting cable length and no luck. the actual shift shaft doesn't have any type of trunion bolt that I am aware of. Maybe your manual will be of assistance. I ordered one, but it will be a couple of weeks before it comes. sounds like your going to have a house full! Good luck. Thanks rodbolt.

on the engine itself there is no adjustments, looking at the 85-92 manual its a striaght rod from the lower to the link under the carb.<br />did you carefully measuer the length of the rod from the eye at the top to the gearcase in nuetral on both units ?

I didn't measure the length of the two rods.I can't compare the two because the shift rod on the other unit has become dislodged from the gear box, and I can't get it back in without rebuilding it.However, the problem did occur when I switched units (the old unit had a bad clutch dog and I had a spare). now, like you said, its like the shift shaft for the new unit is a different length than the old one.
