The engine is out dated, I am not knocking the engine, because I have one waiting for a better boat to put it in.
The major problem is the manifold....it will put tears in your eyes, and a hole in your wallet if it has to be replaced. The last one I bought was in the $500.00 range.

outdated, expensive manifolds (and very heavy too), yes, but for me, a backyard boat mech wannabe, it's mighty easy to work on and understand. just a plain ol motor. no circut boards anywhere to be found on my '72 IL6. i also understand that this is a very durable engine in a boat. and as bondo says, the truck motor will drop right in. as i'm quite sure i got a truck motor (short block)in mine.
as for expense wise. i have no idea. though i must say if yer thinking about buying a boat, remember what b.o.a.t. stands for. break out another thousand........

Re: I/O chevrolet 6cyl strait

There are a lot of different things to put in the motor to try and unseize it. I used tranny fluid others use a detergent motor oil or other things on the market. Whatever you decide to use you need to remove the sparkplugs and I filled the cylinder. A friend of mine bought two cans of pb blaster and put a half a can in each cylinder. Whatever you decide to use put it in the cylinders and forget about it for a week or so. And dont force it to get them loose

Re: I/O chevrolet 6cyl strait

I pulled my plugs and filled the cylinders with transmission fluid. Some people use some type of rust penetrant instead because they say it will help free the rings. After a couple days I tried to get the crank to move by working it back and forth. I did this by loosening two of the bolts on the waterpump pully and putting the screwdriver between them for leverage. Saves the knuckles. Press down on the belt and use a big screwdriver and see if the crank will turn. I did this everyday until it broke loose. If it breaks loose make sure you turn the crank around four or five times. You can then hook up the battery and roll the motor over. Make sure you drape a large towel over the cylinders or you will have quite a mess. Good Luck

Re: I/O chevrolet 6cyl strait

You will need to crank it over and wipe with towels for quite a while before you get it clean enough to put the plugs back in. If you dont do a good job cleaning the cylinders out you will foul plugs. Thats why most use oil because some will burn where tranny fluid doesnt. First things first, get the motor freed
