I have a 65 johnson deluxe and it had its I/O replaced by an outboard becuase the outdrive blew. I would like to put a I/O back in it, but I would like some info on the process. And places I may be able to pick up a engine outdrive combo for cheap, I am willing to rebuild an engine if needed.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... The motor, 'n drive that was originally in yer boat, you'll Never find, 'n ya wouldn't want it anyways,...

It had a Johnny/ Rude V6 Outboard powerhead lain over, 'n mounted to an OMC electric Stringer drive,...
Basically, the Worst of the ole Stringer Drives,....

Run it like it is, 'n Enjoy it,....
When it gets old, trade up to something Better,...

Believe it or not. I actually found the original engine that came out of it. Well part of it. I have the block and most of the parts. The boat was my grandfathers and that is why I want to restore it, but I also want to take this time to set it up how I want it. I just don't think I can find the parts for the original engine drive combo.

Normally I would defer to Bondo's brain on this sorta' thing - but that '65 Deluxe is too weird/cool of a boat to let it go. You've got some sentimental value with it and I'm kinda' sappy too ... so, if it were me I would probably consider keeping it.

Here's the disclaimer: a restore/rebuild is going to be a process of tossing good money into something that nearly nobody else is gonna' want later. It's possibly/probably not going to be cheap - so determine how far you're willing to go on this financially and adjust accordingly (back to Bondo's plan if need be).

Assess your transom. If it was rebuilt well to support the OB, you may have just a limited amount of work to rebuild for an I/O. BUT LOOK CAREFULLY, some boats that had floor mounted Stringer Drives didn't have reinforced transoms and you don't wanna' clamp anything new to the back of that boat (even an OB really) without knowing it was built properly. After that, I would abandon the idea of refitting the boat with an old OMC. I have the Electric Shift Stringer, and while there are some things that I really like about it I don't recommend intentionally refitting to that drive. Look at refitting to a Mercruiser. If you have to do (or have already done) the transom work, then I would go straight to Mercruiser (the build it different for Merc vs. OMC).

It's likely a big, expensive project, but it is a cool old boat (If I run across one or an old Surfer, I'll have a hard time passing it by).

Welcome aboard.

Looking closer I will most likely have to redo the transom. I am already preparing myself have to redo all the stringers and floor. I will post some pics of the transom later today. And it is a very cool design one that I am sure will turn heads when I get her shined and on the water. And would you suggest looking for a wrecked boat and taking the engine drive combo, or just bite the bullet and buy a rebuilt one?

Yes.

I'd see what came available. There's bunches of rotted out boats out there with decent drives in 'em. But if I didn't find anything I was comfortable buying, then I'd have to weigh out the new drive. There's an advantage to a drive warranty in a boat I just sunk a ton of time and energy into.
