We are considering buying a 1977 Glastron SSV 189 that it is on is in GREAT shape. The engine a Merc Cruiser 470, has some problems (owner said it blew a water hose and then blew the heat exchanger) He will take $1000 for it as is. Is it feasible to replace the powerplant? Do we just replace the engine with an improved version, or do we have to replace the engine and the outdrive? Are these alternatives to consider if we can buy the boat at the 'right' price?
If replacement is an option, any advice what to replace it with?

First off what's in it to start.

if it has a 3.0 thats what should probly stay in it.

If the stern drive is good leave it alone unless you replace the motor then you'll need to match up the drive with the motor.

a 77 glastron is probably worth $1500.at best. you can sell the parts off of it for close to that, May take a while. What part of the country are you in Ive got a 470 im parting that may have what you need. Id check the compression before you buy. If thats not good dont buy it.(couldve gotten hot and done some serious damage)

I paid $1200 last year for my '76 V-195 with a locked motor, but it was a boat I wanted, had a special interest in, and I understood the costs involved to fix it up. Just got back from a leisurely cruise at sunset. Have to love a small block Ford 302 in a boat.

The 189 is a nice boat.

If the problem is ith the heat exchanger and hoses, it probably won't be a bad fix, unless the engine was allowed to overheat. When in doubt, let a local marine mech check it out. The 470 is specific to the marine world. It is a Mercruiser made block mated to a Lincoln 460 head and has some unique strengths/weaknesses. I makes incredible power for a 4cyl. I have heard that the heat exchanger was a weak point, but have no first hand knowledge with one.
