I hope I am posting this in the right place, I have been trying to get pic of a i/o motor base an the pic of how the frame is made up, I just have no luck at all on seeing anything with a frame at all, I have even tryed to find how the i/o pontoons are made an no luck, If anyone can help with this I sure thank ya, I don't think it would matter about what model a toon is or what motor, Just to see how they are made, But I have a 1970 Riveria Cruiser it's a oldie but goodie, An it's a 27ft, An have a 470/170hp,, Thanks to any help at all, an I know there is up's an down's about my motor but it's a very good one, :D

The motor is mounted the same way in a pontoon boat as it is in any other boat. The front of the motor is a one piece mount that is directly in front of the motor and attaches to supports that have to be in place in your engine compartment.
The rear of the motor attaches to the transom assembly, which is installed in the boats transom first.
If your pontoon was not set up for the inboard, you cannot simply cut the transom hole and install the I/O. Go to a local used boat dealer and check out the way they are installed. there is a different method for each motor style and size. Not to mention that every manufacturer seems to do it a little differently.
If you are trying to install an I/O into an engine bucked that is for an outboard. Stop. That bucket has to be seriously reinforced, or replaced.

Re: i/o Pontoon motor base

Well I understand that,, But I guess I should have said in the first place that my toon is for an outboard motor an the max of motor is a 85hp, I was just thinking about maken it an i/o pontoon, I can't find any where I live so I could look at them, Thats why I just trying to find pic of the frame just to see how they are made, I know they are in a box like but just wondering how the box is mounted to the frame cause ya can't just cut couple of the cross beams an leave it like that,, Hope ya understand, I know it's pos to be a lot of work some say's but it going to be a long winter too, lol,

What is your budget on this, hopefully very large.

I am at Bennigton so I see I/O pods everyday and I really don't think it is something you can just make in your garage unless you have a fab shop and are a very good welder.

There actually is no frame, they are made from formed sheet aluminum and welded, the engine attaches to motor mounts welded into the pod and of coarse where the outdrive goes throught he transom.

And no I cannot get you pics, I like my job way to much to do that.

As I always say, draw it out first, if you can't get a measured drawing on paper you probably aren't going to be able to build it either.

I'm not trying to pee on your parade but this is a major major project, the pod is also a hull so it needs to withstand all the pounding it gets from the water and the engine in the pod plus the force put on it by the outdrive.

Good luck and I hope you can pull this off, it woudl be interesting to see what you come up with.

5150abf is correct.
You are going to be doing structural modifications to the boat once you build your pod to hang it.
I have spent years building high performance boats. I have put obscene motors in things that were never meant to have them. I built a 90mph golf cart, and a canoe powered by a 720cc Rotex motor.
I would pass on what you are considering. If it were my option and my heart was set on an I/O pontoon boat, I'd score a decent outboard rig it onto the boat you have, sell it and start hunting for a fixer I/O boat.
You said the toon you have is rated for 85 hp. That 470 is going to destroy that boat unless you strip it down to the pontoons and build it to withstand the increased hp.
You should have seen my canoe. It's on the bottom of the lake now, I was doing 70 mph when things went south. The hospital stay was long and the bill high, but you should have seen me go!
The wheel standing golf cart can be seen on you tube.

Well it seem's like I should go ahead an try this, lol, An haven a 470 170hp on a 27ft pontoon just what kind of sped would any of you guys think the toon would have,, I not trying to build a hot rod but just wondering how it would do for speed on water,, I am no way of trying to be better then anybody at all it is just stuck to my head an just wonder ya know,, An if I did do this then I know the toon would be strip to make it stonger, But just been wanting to see how the back of toon was made,, There is not a i/o toon within a 100 miles from where I live at that I know of,, But want to thank ya guz for the imfo,,

I am not trying to talk you out of it or anyhting, just letting you know it is a mojor project with alot of things to htink about, I didn't even think an=bout Havasus point of the structural side of the boat.

I hope you can do it and please post pics, you are talking to a guy that made a camper top on his wife sewing machine so i ahve done alot of stuff that people would have told me I couldn't do.

Poke around on pontoon builders web sites, you may find a pic that will help you, I know we had a pic of an empty pod in one of our catalogs at Bennington, it may be on the website too and if you get it there I can't get in trouble for it.
Good luck and keep us posted.
