i seperated my bravo 3 drive upper and lower to check for gear oil leaks into the exhaust. when i sperated them i found some slight gear oil on top of the shaft area (highlighted in red in pic) this is the shaft that goes into the upper gear box. is there supposed to be some residual gear oil in that area?

You can't check for leaks after you took it apart, now that you do have it apart, replace the orings, then put the drive back together and pressure test it. The pressure test has to be done BEFORE you put the gear lube in.

PS, if you are going to post a picture, at least make it big enough to see.

i did have it pressure checked it didnt hold pressure. they told me it was cheaper for me to replace the 3 orings then to have it rechecked to eliminate those as the leak.i did not find any gear oil in the exhaust ports or the water ports at all but did find some around the shaft base. is this indicative of the upper gear housing leaking or is it normal? sorry for the pic

Leaks of any kind on the outdrive is NOT normal.

After you replace the orings, pressure check it again to verify the repair. Don't just assume those new orings fixed the problem.
