hi everyone my boat has been giving me hard starts pinging at higher rpm above 3k and an occasional backfire due to i believe a misfire..... alot has been replaced on this boat already...... the issue is not fuel related and not caused by a bad coil cap rotor plug wires or advance module ............ all i know is that after about 1500-1800 my tach does not work properly this has happened on 3 kinds of tach and is not the tach..... after 1800 the tach goes up to about 3500-4000 and floast up and down doing so faster or slower sometimes coming back to 1800 for a split second then jumps back. At close to wot the tach reads anywhere from 5k-7k or higher and lets face it my little 3.0 mercruiser 2004 est ignition can not make it to these rpms....... Some times i will get a bad misfire think im going to break down and get stuck but always get back shut it off and restart and the problem goes away sometimes .............. any one have any ideas

No, it's not very likely to have 3 bad tach's.

I would disconnect the tach signal wire on the engine, and pull a new temp wire from engine to the tach.

Edit:
Also check that you have ground and battery power to the tach.
But that is probably not you fault...

Re: i think i have an electrical short ???

the bat ground and signal wires were all tested and are good i ran three temps and had the same results...... without a tach i still have the same issues...... the tach is getting a bad signal but the coil is new and the old coil had the same issue so i am assuming the coil is getting a bad signal also but i dont know where to look from here
