thats kinda how i tell a gimble brg. is good. when you feel of it do you feel play there?
i'm not shure what is going on there? perhaps the play you feel is the fwd end of the bar, up in the coupler? do you think?

No the play is definately in the gimble bearing. If I put the bar just in the bearing and very carefully wiggle it their is a little play. This is the first time I've checked alignment so I don't no if a little play is normal or if its getting worn and I can get another season out of it?

There is usually a little play-the bearings do need clearance, clarence(it's a joke, son). And I've found when gimbals wear out they usually get rough quickly.

Maybe it's ok? If I put the alignment bar in all the way into the coupler I can't feel any side to side play in the bearing. Am I worrying about nothing?

Should I put the drive back on and not worry about it?

Put the drive on and go boating. It's fine.

I developed a leak in my boot and it forced the water through the bearing and it got LOUD and NASTY fast and you could feel it .I'm in the process of replacing mine with the bellows now.
