I got one head on a V4 that took a beating. All kinds of gouges from little balls making there way from the bottom. I got out my dremel and started cleaning the gouges up. After about 15 minutes of this "cleaning", I put the head down and said "fawk it".

I am having doubts using this, what do you think? Stealer said I could use it. I am worried about hot spots, early detonation and loss of compression. Am I overexaggerating?

Hey spark....What kind of engine, year and HP do you have, that you need a head for? I have two extras off a mid-80 to late 80's Evinrude/Johnson, 85 HP., right and left bank. ...Bob in Calif..

Sparkroost.... Cylinder heads that have been pitted with steel particles due to having a piston ring or bearings fail, whatever the cause may be should never be reused.

It is impossible to remove every bit of the steel that is logged in that cylinder head dome, and those pieces will glow (when running) like a glow plug of a model airplane engine. This results in pre-ignition which will in time cause a piston to disintergrate.

List the model number of your engine and which head is damaged (port/starboard) and possibly someone here cna help you out with a perfect used one. Also on the head itself, there is a part number listed which, if you can locate it, would pin the particular head down.

it's a 1973 115 evinrude. I think it's the right bank(head with the thermostat in it). I would rather get a good used one. If anyone has one please let me know :)

I have rebuilt snowmobile 2 stoke engines with such damage to the heads, and you know, my snowmobile blew the crank 2 seasons ago, pitted the heads.

I used sandpaper to clean them up and low and behold, 3,000 miles later it runs fine.

I run this motor up to 9,000 RPMS all the time- I may keep it at this RPM for miles at a time. Never heard of any problems.
-John

sparkroost....have to agree with Joe Reeves. A long, long time ago when I first started fiddlin' aroung with outboards, I rebuilt one that had blown the rings. The head was full of dents and pieces of ring material. So I said, can't hurt. So I cleaned them up much like you tried and put it back together. Almost a year later to the day, the darn thing went south on me. I am a heavy boater and I use my motors. So I pulled the heads. The cylinder that blew was the one with the pits and left over metal from the last rebuild. The others were perfect. Don't take a chance. At least get a good used head. That was my $.02 worth. Good Luck!

I think I am going to have to agree with you in favor or replacing this one. Part #317849H. I do think that in some cases dremeling it out would be ok. In my case there are some pretty good gouges. It just don't feel right using it. I have comletly stripped the entire motor of paint. re-surfaced all gasket areas. This thing looks like new. I hope to get some years outta this motor.

I appreciate all your help! Any tips would greatly be appreciated!

The best tip you could get is, "If ya' don't got a manual, get one". The OEM manual would be best for you. It will have step by step instructions on putting the engine back together.

Good Luck sparkroost! If ya got questions, usually someone is around here to help.

Re: I think I need head

That's one of the first things I got for the motor. I have one of the OMC 1972 manuals(I have a 73 motor). Excellent manual! Better than the P.O.S. generic one they have for sale at most boat stores. I have been reading through it the past few months during this project. Thank God I am not in a hurry!

I realize there are some additional "tricks" that are not mentioned in the book. Since I lack the experience of doing many of these motors I am trying to educate myself mentally before I physically turn screws. Anyone can put a motor together.. But will it last...
