I think I rebuilt my transom to thin

Seems like I remember it only being 1.75" overall, when I finished. I realize, that I am short of Mercruiser's 2.~2.25" thickness requirements.
I am currently experiencing a lighting knocking or thumping noise from the Starboard Gimbal housing area. ( I replaced bearings in both housings upon reassembly) So that could possibly be the source, but from where?
The only thing I can think of that would change from a thinner transom would be the distance from the coupler to the drive shaft. If it's not making contact, what are some other areas of concern? The alignment went well for both engines. I filled and re-drilled all the engine mounts, while I was in there.
Merry Christmas!

Ayuh,... If the transom is too thin, the drive shaft will bottom out in the coupler,...

So, insteada the rubber cushion, it might be metal to metal, 'n yer noise,...

Mine seemed to measure about the same,I checked a few areas uopn teardown.luckily I found the specs and built it to spec.
I think the thing was built to bare minimum from factory to save on materials, then rot kicks in,someone tightens the bolts to stop the leak, crushing the wood. The original transom had an added 1/2" wood plate glassed on the inside for clearance, now its one solid transom.
