Hi everyone,

I rebuilt this Mercruiser 5.7L 350, I don't have the serial number for it since it was originally an automotive motor but all of the accessories, e.i. manifolds, carb, dist came off a 1979 Mercruiser 5.7L. Anywho, I was running it on the ground after the rebuild, all was going well and running great...then I turned off the motor briefly and when I went to go start it again she was locked up. It basically cranked with a delay, I turned the key to start it, didn't turn and then a few seconds later it cranked in a painful mannor. Pulled all the sparks and sure enough a bunch of water dumped out all the cylinders.

So far I've only pulled the plugs, cracked the motor a dozen or more times, and fogged all the cylinders. Maybe if someone can tell me why this happened and what else I'm gonna have to do to fix it I can avoid this ever happening to me again in the future. My guess is I had the water pressure up to high and when I shut er' down it forced water where it should be but idk. Did I just blow out my head gaskets? Thanks for your help I look forward to hearing what you all have to say.

Read some other threads including the "water in oil" in the adults section and from what I gather I have an exhaust manifold/riser issue being that I had water in all the cylinders. Would you all concur?

shutting it off above normal RPM can make it diesel and that will suck if full. I would remove the drive and let it run for 20 or 30 seconds to dry it out. Then do your tests to find the problem. do a search on here.

I was running it on the ground so no need to remove the drive, all the work is still fairly easy. I don't recall being that move above abnormal idle but I didn't ahve a tach hooked up so I can't say for sure. The only thing I did differently, as I have run this on the ground for over 20 min previously, was turned up the water pressure just a little more than normal. Well....regardless at his point in the game I think I'lll just attack those manifolds and see whats up. THanks

You can exchange 2 manifold bolts with 2 long ones.
Then remove all but one in the center.
Run engine on water till warm
shut off and kill water supply at the same time
remove center bolt slide manifold out to end of bolts and you will see water coming out if you have a manifold leak.
Be sure to remove all plugs before you turn it over again.
