Yeah.. So I replaced this rusted out fuel sending unit. Worked great(not at first, had to play with ground connection after connecting new sender) but 3 weeks later, gauge now says empty. I know I have at least a half tank. Time to get the volt meter back out. Ugh! Key on and off both show empty. When I turn the key on, I get just the tiniest of jumps at the needle. I'm guessing it's the ground again, although I did a preliminary wiggle after discovering it wasn't working again. I'll update accordingly..

Oh, I'm definitely running a fuel filter heh. Taking the tank out to clean that crap would be a huge undertaking as it is under factory decking. Just a matter of time until the pickup tube gets clogged eh? The float was nowhere to be found. Maybe eaten completely by the fuel?? Although that sender would appear to have rotten away quite a while ago. The boat is an '83 model. Fairly certain that was factory equipment. Starcraft.

Old gauge and new sending unit working again. The ground it was using went to a rivet on a foot of the tank which also had another length of wire leading to the battery. Looked clean but must be intermittent. You can wiggle it a bit there with no effect. So I ran a new piece of wire from sending unit directly to battery and everything is working fine. Yay! Half tank of gas heh.

Ayuh,.... Technically, that's the Bonding Wire, 'n is supposed to go to the engine Block, Not the battery....

even though the motor's block is grounded to the battery (-) post...

Just sayin'.....

Hmm, how would you recommend I run that then? This was a factory install I'm sure. This is an outboard motor hanging off a 16' Starcraft tinny.
