Took the day off work and took my grandaughter on a last week before school starts fishing trip today. My wife, grandaughter, son and I went over to Mosquito Lagoon and launched out of the small town of Edgewater. We picked up a few dozen shrimp at the marina just south of Edgewater and headded out. Around noon we ran out of shrimp and my grandaughter wanted to go back to the marina for more.
I told little Shelbie we would do it again sometime, I didn't like the looks of the dark cloud moving in. I wasn't worried about rough water because Mosquito Lagoon in the Edgewater area is only a few hundred yards wide with plenty of islands to hide behind. I was more worried about the wife getting mad if she got soaked in a rain shower and from the looks of he cloud moving in the boats little top would not be enough to keep us dry, so we headded back to the ramp instead.
I will be honest here, if it had been just my son and I we probably would have stayed out. Here in Florida in the summer you either do all your fishing in the morning or you deal with daily thunder storms. Offshore I never tempt mother nature but sometimes inshore we just run for cover and let the storm pass then go back out. Anyway today calling it a day at noon turned out to be a good idea. We got home and after cleaning up the boat I turned on the local news channel. Guess what? They had a news story about a water spout that hit a marina in the small town of Edgewater around 12:30, it picked up one boat and slamed it into a pickup truck. The only marina I know about it Edgewater is the one where we would have been going for bait. I think we made the right decision.
