I cannot believe that the weather forecasters got it wrong again!

Today was suppose to be...

Clear, light wind, 75 - 78 degrees.

Instead we got...

Fog, wind SW @ 15mph, 60 degrees.

If these people can demand $150,000 a year, then they should be held liable when they get a forecast soooooooo wrong.

I know some of you are going to claim that you can't predict "Mother Nature", but that clause just is not true anymore.

With all the tax dollars the people of this country contribute to the weather services, and all the equipment that they have available, they can get the forecasts alot closer they they do!

Just an observation and some food for thought.

Kenny

Re: I want to shoot the Weatherman!

Kenny here in Calgary , the weather forcast is
usually wrong. I must add the only forcast that
is usually reliable is the one that sounds some
thing like this.
..Tonight there will be periods of darkness, the
forcast for tomorrow brings increasing chance
for periods of sunlight...

Re: I want to shoot the Weatherman!

Two thoughts come to mind ... The Weather Rock, hanging from a rope, if its moving its windy, wet its raining, gone, tornado ...

and the words NOT RAINING painted on a board, Raining of course in indelible ink ... when it rains, the word NOT gets washed away

:p :p :p

hey Kenny, are you in town hall? or county?

Re: I want to shoot the Weatherman!

Hey CastawayRay,

What would make you think that I'm involved with Town Hall or County Government?

I'm just an average John Q. Public type.

I just hate having my tax dollars wasted on phony weather forecasting, or anything that is as inacurate as the National Weather Service.

If they are going to continue to guess the weather, then it shouldn't come out of taxpayers pockets, just so that the pretty faced forecasters can collect absorbanant salaries!

Just watch the Weather Channel for 15 minutes and you will see how the forecasters are more concerned about how their smile looks while they continually flub-up the script, then the acuracy of their reports.

Its just an observation, and in my opinion, a big waste of taxpayers money.

Kenny

Re: I want to shoot the Weatherman!

Kenny - In your first post you complain about the Nat. Weather Service, then allude to the weather channel in your second post. These are two different organizations. The NWS is part of the federal gov't. The NWS forecast accuracy is extremely high - if you want an NWS forecast go to the following link - it is the NWS office home page that covers your area. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/ You can get a personalized forecast for the area you area interested in. You can also link to every other NWS web page through the "organization" link, so no matter where you will be boating, fishing you can get an accurate, continuously updated forecast for that area.

The Weather Channel is a TV station that has absolutely nothing to do with the NWS or the gov't. They do not use the NWS weather forecasts - they run their own computer model that spits out the forecasts(?) that they carry over the airwaves. As with any media market - they are in it for the money - advertising space and ratings is what it is all about.

THe NWS has been consistently rated the best run, most effective gov't agency for quite a few years now. They continue to receive A's from independent watchdog groups, ie - those outside the government. And for this you pay $2.50 a year in taxes. And I can assure you - none of us make $150,000 a year. We only wish :) Check us out. I am proud to be a meteorologist employed by the NWS. :)

Re: I want to shoot the Weatherman!

gemstone,

The NOAA station here near me at Upton NY, is even worse than the weather channel!

They did not get the forecast correct or even close, once this summer!

And their transmissions are so poor that you can barely figure out what they are talking about, and the web site was down 99% of the time!

More continued waste by the National Weather Service, IMHO.

Now gemstone, I am not trying to attack you personnally, just trying to point out further government waste of taxpayers dollars!

I am sure you are good at what you do, but the public just doesn't see it that way and NOAA needs to make tremendous strides in a forward direction to correct the problems that exist.

If they were to improve, I'm sure my viewpoint would change, but in an area that is so dependant on accurate weather forecasting for the security of the local economy, I find these services totally inadaquite(sp?).

I'm sure that in SD, where you are, the forecasts are adaquite, but here in the NE USA, these forecasts are horriffic, no matter the source.

Kenny
