Does anyone here have any experience with the 12 volt pumps available in the iboats store? My dealer wants 105.00 for just an oil change and I would rather do it myself.
I bought a Moeller hand operated type at Boaters World for about $60.
Works as advertised......about 15-20 pumps will drain your engine quickly.
You either insert a plastic tube into the dipstick tube and it appears to bottom out in the lowest part of the pan.... You pretty much get it all that way. You can also connect it to the dipstick tube with the supplied thread-on connection. The bottom of the dipstick tube on mine is very close to the bottom of the pan so it seems to get it all (or most) that way.
Using the plastic tube inside the dipstick tube is slower since the tube is of a smaller diameter. And it's a little messier since you have to wipe off the plastic tube as you pull it out.
I did mine with cold oil using the thread on connection and pumped 18 strokes. The pump sucked air after only 5 min minutes or so. 18 strokes took less than a min to produce the necessary vacuum to drain the pan.
Not sure exactly which pump you are looking at, but the first one the "Porta-Quick" is $180, so that isn't the one, the second "Seasense" is only $33. Nothing about a $60 pump. But, if you warm the oil by running the engine till the oil is warm, almost any pump (even a drill pump) will pump the oil out of the engine if done correctly.
Hmm. Looking at the porta quick it looks like the impeller is 39.99 before you click on the link it says "Starting at $39.99". Oops. I like the self contained pump I think I may just stick with something like that. I just have to get the oil out of the crankcase I don't need to get too carried away. Thanks guys.
Doesn't $105.00 for a simple oil change sound ridiculously high?
Since those "boat people" ARE in business to make money, it's not surprising that they would want about $100 to change your oil. Most car dealerships charge $75-90 per hour or so.....so it's hard to make money at $19.95, $29.95 etc....
They lose money on oil changes to get you to pay for the other "stuff".
They lose even more if they spill on the "carpet'!!
