Hi all.
A friend of mine just gave me a ski boat with a 1974 1150 motor that requires some repair.
It seems the lower unit gear case had water in it and over the winter it froze pushing the internal components out the back.
A quick inspection revealed damaged threads on the inside surface of the housing.
Is it possible to increase the thread size and install an oversized ring if available?
Also, what does 36 kw translate to in HP?

Aerocook, I have never heard of oversize threads/retainer, but if all you need is a way to hold the bearing carrier in place, I would think their are many ways. How about some pop rivets through the housing to hold the retainer in place? Some Marine-Tex would like work as well, but be hard to remove for any repairs.

It is most important to fix the source of the leak, or it will happen again. I am actually surprized the housing didn't crack.

Best bet is to locate another housing or complete lower unit. There is no way to "rig" your situation. The lower unit needs to be sound, or you WILL be left stranded out in the middle of the water. The "retainer" seals water out, and locates the gears with proper backlash. Anything less than 100% leaves you with a lower unit that leaks water and causes slop in the gears. You'd be lucky to get even a few runs out of it. Try Ebay, you can locate a lower unit on there usually...
