ICE damage 95 mercruiser alpha 1 gen 2 4.3 vortec 18' cerlebrity

My lower unit shift shaft seal went bad and filled lower with water.Ice busted lower unit over the winter. So it needs to be re placed.My out drive has a 1.84 ratio. I can buy a good 2.0 ratio out drive cheap! Is this to much gear for my boat!

Ayuh,.... The gear ratio is in the Upper unit,... The lowers change be interchanged...

I no it could be inerchanged but i can buy the whole outdrive cheep (upper and lower) its like brand new. The one I would like to buy has a 2.0 ratio.I was woundering if that is to much gear for my boat.

Without knowing more the simple answer is 'probably'.... What prop are you currently running, and what revs are you getting at Wide Open? (With the 1.84)..

Im running 19"p. 5500 and over @ (WOT). I've never ran (WOT) because once it gets to 5500 it wants to keep reving so I back off and run @ a safe 4000 rpm

Yeah, that's WAY over the top... With the current 1.84:1 you should be running a 23" (would knock about 800rpm off the current top RPMs). With that 19" prop I bet it takes off like a Polaris rocket ....

So, a 23" would be the right prop for the 1.84... For a 2:1 you'd need a 25"... You are probably going to need to get either a 4 blade prop or a stainless steel one...

I would also advise not to run it up to the 5500 you mentioned at all, i know you dont sustain that but even getting it there is way into the redline, they dont like that very much.
