Ice rescue here today - some people just don't get it.

Happens every year despite the repeated warnings by media and emergency responders to stay off the ice.

Winter has been quite warm so far and ice has formed only in some locations to about 4". Most of the main lake is wide open still. The last few days have been above freezing and today the temps were 50* with lots of rain overnight. Late this afternoon, 4 fishermen went thru the ice and had to be rescued.

Air boats from two different fire departments, an air ambulance, fire trucks, police vehicles and land ambulances all had to respond because of pure stupidity on the part of a few individuals lacking any common sense. Luckily no one was seriously injured or killed. Hope they are fined heavily.

Here's a link to the video of the rescue taking place.

Out here on Oneida Lake they bill you for all cost of the rescue.

I certainly don't get why they were out there.
I went thru once when I was 12, never again.

I also don't get the response. A bit over the top IMO.

Let's see, 3 squads can't block off a street, so let's send 12. Why not 37 ?
And the fire trucks ???
And all the emergency personnel going out on the ice? You already know the ice is unsafe.
Wait for the hovers and chopper IMO.

Those little Yellow Perch are to die for eh?!... and I've they get really super active under weak ice like that!

Good thing Cooks Bay is relatively shallow, they might have been able to stand in neck deep water out that far.

Had they been wearing floatation suits, they wouldn't have had to call 911:

I wonder if that water felt cold?

Had a friend, a retired conservation officer, who fell through the ice last year and succumbed in water that was chest deep. I am sure since he had all the training he would have had his ice awls with him but the cold got him before he could get out. All the training we do is when we are wearing dry flotation suits which provide enough buoyancy to assist in self rescue. He was an avid outdoorsman, in good health for his age, and often ice fished alone. Another sad ending for a good man.

Get the same situation here on Lake St Clair. Have not heard anything on the news yet this weekend but from where we are we can see and hear the rescue chopper on it's way somewhere and we heard it yesterday !!!
I think these could be the same people that do not clear their windshields.

Ice picks are antiquated, and as you saw... don't work if you're out of shape and your heavy clothing is saturated, or you're too weak from exposure.

You can throw the ice picks away when you have a floatation suit.

Even just a regular boating PFD under or over your outerwear will help more than ice picks.

There were 135 guys that had to be rescued off of Lake Erie back in 2009. Lots of video out there on that one. The bottom of the lake is littered with four wheelers. If it freezes, they go.

You familiar with Cooks Bay jigngrub? That's a long way from your stompin grounds. Yep it's pretty shallow overall, but they were probably in about 12-15ft of water where they were.

All four were treated for hypothermia and one was hospitalized.

Looks maybe like the initial responders were not equiped/prepaired/trained for ice rescue. They called in other departments that have specially trained personel and equipment for ice rescue.
