A friend and I recently purchased a 2001 Regal 1800 LSR from a private seller. We knew the seller had performed an engine swap with a rebuilt 4.3L and found that the boat runs well and was cheap.

We have had it out a few times with no problem (other than the wiring being a mess from the swap) but we would like to identify what we have so we can properly improve and maintain it.

I sent the Hull ID # to Regal and they responded right away with the engine and stern drive information as the boat was originally equipped.

Engine - V30GSSX Ser #4012022961
Drive - SX-M 1.97 Ser #4202010458

The drive info matches what is still in the boat and the info I find on that motor indicates a 3.0 diesel.

The engine in place now is a 4.3L with Vortec heads and 2bbl Holly carb. The engine casting # is 14099090. I believe this to be a 96-98 GM.

We checked compression today and found 155-160# at all 6 stops which was pleasing. Examining ignition shows what looks like a V6 Voyager distributor.

1. Are my interpretations of original and existing equipment correct?
2. Any problem with running that gear with a 4.3 (prop is a 14.25 x 19 ... seems like we may need more prop)
3. We are beginning with ignition so what components (distributor, coil, wires, plugs, alternator) should I source?

Thanks for any input.

My .02... If the boat runs well, I would just focus on the tune up items that you don’t know when were changed last I.e plugs, wires, dizzy cap, rotor. Change all the fluids .... motor oil, outdrive oil and impeller. Probably a good idea to replace bellows if you don’t know when it was last replaced and check alignment/grease gimbal bearing.
Run the boat at WOT and see where your rpms are at. 4.3L WOT rpm range is 4400-4800 if I’m not mistaken. Adjust your prop based on meeting that range if all else is operating properly.
