ID plate corroded on Evinrude: how to find manufacture year?

Hi all; I have a 120 HP 4cyl VRO Evinrude, bought as a project. I suspect it's about 1990 but the ID plate on the transom bracket is too corroded to be of use. Are there other ways to determine the year of manufacture? Happy to post photos if that's allowed. Thanks for advice

there is a plug on the top of the motor block, its a round disc about 1 inch diameter and has numbers stamped on it.
