The stuck prop, Frozen to prop shaft. I know this is more likley to happen on a Merc than a Johnson or evinrude, but... has anyone ever tried removing the prop nut and run it often for the next six months without it, to loosen the frozen prop? Just a silly question...

Sounds like a great way to loose a prop.

Try some PB Blaster let it soak, some here use Krill (? might have the name wrong) some heat and some light taps with a hammer. You just need to break it loose a little, I would think.

Good luck

If people are using the method of running a motor without a prop nut to loosen it, then they shouldn't be anywhere near a boat, water, or even breathing oxygen for that matter.

i have seen people back lug nuts off and go for a short drive to loosen a seized on rim. not sure if darwins theory took care of them or not.

Re: idea for loosening stuck prop

the real answer is...... destroy the prop to remove it, if the motor isn't worth a new prop, it all could go for scrap metal and salvage. use an aviation style locking nut and run it loose enough for the prop vibration to have an effect. although penetrants can be a help in many instances, they seem to have very little effect on vertical drives stuck in cranks ,or seriously frozen merc props. a prop is much cheaper than a gearcase or propshaft, and it doesn't take much to tear one up, and seriously, I would sooner have one fall to the bottom of a lake than ruin associated parts trying to get one off. I might entertain the idea of taking a new prop and propnut onboard if I were trying that....

Seems like the wrong answer to me. Pulled mine the other day, and it wasn't budging. I just hit pretty hard a few times with a rubber mallet from behind (pushing it off the shaft) and it unfroze.

The real answer is if you can't remove it yourself, take it to a marine mechanic who may have a prop puller. You'll probably spend less on 2 hours of labor at a mechanic than you will on a new prop.

Tilt the motor up and apply penetrating oil to the splines. Wait a while and then put a 2X4 between the prop blades and the gearcase and pry gently. If that doesn get it, a puller will be the next attempt. If that still doesn't get it. Cut off the prop, cut off the rubber hub and cut the brass hub and split it with a chistle.

Yeah I love people that would rather let their junk fall in the lake so other people snag it or hit it with a prop strike later........

Actually, the "real answer" is to ask the question in the Merc forum down the hall on the left...:D....they have WAYYYY more experience than we OMC owners....;)
