Idendtifying starter #?

Older 50 hp. Merc. 0D649877 ser #.
OEM# (I think), 5066015 on side of starter.
We think it needs brushes, Starter won't "spin" motor. It spurts, as if it was trying to turn a high compression engine. Bendix works, no grinding or bad noises. Battery is good (even tried a new battery).
Growl (motor turns a bit), pause, growl, pause, growl, etc. Cables not hot, nothing smokes. This has been a progressing issue. IE: It used to start good, then fair, then harder, now it growls in spurts and won't start. Not even a cough.
Thanks,

o:)That was next on my list. It would be nice to know which starter to buy also.
Maybe someone can tell me this. There seems to only be 2 rebuild starter kits for all starters on OBs. The 2 brush & the 4 brush. Am I right?

that is your choice. as an electrican that deals with motor windings it could be a problem in the windings if that is the case you will have bought the new brushes (which did not help my old starter) and if there is a winding problem you will then pay for a new starter. could be a 20-40 attempt to fix. good luck you will need to buy or make a tool to keep the brushes in place as you put the starter back together. it can be a pain to do with out the tool.

good luck

o:)It is my buds boat. He is shopping for a newer motor. Just wants to take the chance that brushes will do it on this one. It's his call.

:|If I can't get pointed to a site where they sell the kit or brush set, then the tool or the challange isn't going to happen.
Who sells the kits or brushes? Anyone? all I find is new starters.
Thanks,

Re: Idendtifying starter #?

if you go to google and type in 5066015 replacement parts it will bring you to a lot of sites. the starter you gave is the 4 brush starter and just the replacement brushes part # 18-5697 you can then google that and look for the cheapest or which ever ones you want to try.
is the starter been torn apart yet? if not i would do this before hand as the age of this motor it could be a few different problems and yes the brushes can be one of the problem but you need to look in side before spending any money. the one site i looked at while doing my google search for the parts just to make sure it was correct. i looked at saveonboating.com (could not find them here on iboats but i am sure they have them.) but they were $15.54 on the other site. plus shipping and handling maybe tax.

good luck
