Identical?

I have a 73 johnson 25hp. I found a 78 for cheap and thought I would verify that these motors were mostly identical? To my knowledge, they were. Info appreciated.

Thanks. I was looking for an experienced tech to give a more clear answer. But if not, I can compare every part from one to the other on the computer for a few hours.

Or I can ask another question: Why are the pinion and reverse gears for the 73 and 78 the same, but the forward gear is a different part # (according to the link above). See the trouble?

What are you trying to swap between the two motors?
The motors are not identical.
The ignition system is completely different, for one example.
There are significant differences in the powerhead.
The drive shaft is different, so it is not a easy lower end swap.
