Identification of my Merc.

I just took a 1980 Galaxie off someones hands. It has a 140hp inline 4 cyl. Mercruiser. I've been to the Merc site and can't find how to I.D. it. I took the boat as a project to work on on the weekends but I don't even know where to begin. I've had experience working on outboards and lower ends but I'm new to the sterndrives. I need to I.D. it first. Does anyone know a site where I can just plug in the serial numbers? Or maybe someone has or has worked on my engine in the past.

Not really much info to add to what you have. Your engine is a 140 IL 4 used by Mercruiser between 79 and 82.
The drive is a Mercruiser One drive used between 78 and 82.

The service manuals you need for it are manual number 3 for the engiine and 4 for the outdrive.

There are lots of these engines out there and lots of people have worked on them.
