OK, I have a 1978 AMM Bellboy that is a 17 and a half foot, 175hp from what I can tell it is a ford 302 and I Believe its an electric shift.
model # 981060
serial # W129690
(I cant find anything on these? any help?) Do I have a stringer? Cobra. IDK

So I took the boat out 2 years ago with no problems other than a tilt motor that needed to be changed, changed that along with all lube in the engine and outdrive.

this weekend was running great we were planing great taching about 2600 and then all of a sudden something happened, it just went like it was in nuetral, revving high but not going forward. so I shut it down and fire it back up and no forward shift at all, nothing. reverse works fine but nothing happening at all in forward gear.

Question - do the sileniods control the shift or tilt ?

also I have the 2 big plugs, one yellow, one black on the top of the engine... do these control shift?

any tips or places to start looking would be great.

thank you in advance

Collin

You need to clean all the contacts in the electical shift mechanisim. At the shifter and the drive connections.
If you changed oil,it takes 70/80 weight oil 90 is too thick.
Try to make the solenoids in the lower unit shift by hooking them direct to a battery.J

thank you for the heads up on the oil, I will check to make sure the weight is correct, I still have the bottles. type C in the lower right?

So the sileniods do control the shift?
I was thinking that they did the tilt. that is good news, hopefully just a sileniod.

When you say the sileniods in the lower unit are you talking about the sileniods on the back of the engine?

I can see 3 sileniods,

one has the hot line from the battery running to it, I assume that this is for cranking.

then I have 2 on the back of the engine. are these the sileniods you are referring to ? do these control the shift?

Hmm so i cant get anything to happen running a hot wire directly to the sileniods, at least the ones that are on the engine.

are the sileniods on the engine the ones that control the shift?

Re: identification \ shift woes

after looking through my garbage Seloc manual and various wiring diagrams, it looks like sileniods do not control the shift. it looks like there is a Blue and Green wire than run from the control box through the transon by the tilt motor and these are the wires that control the shift.

what I am thinking is doing a test on these wires and running 12 volts from the battery to each one of them, adn hopefully this will determine if the reason why not engaging the forward drive is just a wiring problem or a bigger problem in the drive itself.

does this sounds like a good game plan ?

Shift solenoids are in the drive. The ones you see are for start and T/T.
If you have ever had water in the lower unit it's possible you will never get it to shift. If you have:then fill it with a WD-40 or a thin fluid(kerosene) and then let it set overnight.Drain then try to shift it without fluids. You should hear the solenoids click.turn it by hand as you shift.Make sure the push buttons are making a connection and shifting.
This might help.J

Re: identification \ shift woes

Jerry,

thank you for the reply. I am just trying to figure out all of the shift components to start troubleshooting this and my manual is not much help. so I appreciate the info on the shift sileniods that they are in the drive.

I will make sure all of the contacts are clean on the controls, however I do not have buttons for F adn R like some models, I only have the nuetral button in the middle that you pull out. but I will try to take apart that and make sure everything is clean in there.
