I have a 225 johnson and I'm trying to get the right year but have no data plate and the welsh plug seems to be missing. I have done alot of research and know that Johnson did away with the 235 in 85 and replaced it with the 225 in 86. It would not be using a type 1 CD cause it does not have external lead connectors, but it still has 2 packs. I have an 88 225 that has a single pack instead of 2 so I think my motor is either an 86 or 87. My main questions are did the 87 use a single or double cd pack and whats the difference between the VRO and the VRO2. I know my 88 uses the VRO2 cause its labeled but they look identical. I see alot of post on here say you may be able to use the numbers off of the heads, CD packs or carbs to ID a motor how would you go about doing that exactly. Thanks for any help

do a parts search on the different years to see when they went to the single power pack..my guess is that 86-87 would be right. unless the cowl is not the right one, in which case you may have to do some crazy part number cross references.

UP under all the electrical parts behind the flywheel there is the stamped identification numbers in the block. You must remove the power packs to get to location. At least they where on my block.
