G,Day. I have come across an old Johnson motor, the Model No. Plate is missing however the Serial No. is 1786341. The owner thinks it is about 10HP. The most noticable thing about it is the way the motor cover comes off, the cover is made of aluminium and splits in the middle, the back half lifts up after releasing two clips on the side, the front half then pulls forward. The motor is mainly Red in colour the cowl is white and red. Any details of age would be usefull. Thanks in advance.

Which way round are the red and white on the cowl, mainly red with white trim, or mainly white with red trim?
This is almost certainly going to a be a mid-late 50s motor, have you checked the Old OMC site yet? Have a look at the years 1956-58 and you should find your motor there.

If it's mostly red with white "fins" down the side, it's 1956. If it's mostly red with wide white stripe on top, it's 1957. If it's like 1957 with white/red color scheme reversed, it's 1958.

You may be lucky and find a source of NOS clutch dogs, there was a guy selling some on eBay a few weeks back, he had quite a lot for sale I think.
Otherwise you can try turning yours around and see if that helps, if only one side is worn it's better to have it jump out of reverse than forward!
I contacted a few used parts suppliers and found a couple who could have supplied one for my 18, but I turned mine around and it's fine now so I didn't buy a replacement. They weren't asking very much for them.
