Read the sticky and Im not sure which manual to pull? I have a 19' Sylvan Super Sportster. The boats technically a 1991, but not sure if it has a 90 or 91 motor in it. It has a 3.0L mercruiser I\O - I think an Alpha One. I did pull the serial off the outdrive -# 00365956 if that helps. The shop always needs the serial to price parts. Im specifically looking for info related to the tilt\trim (troubleshooting\wiring\etc.), but I want the full manual for future needs. The link would be great..

- My tilt\trim has been needing a rebuild kit, been running up and down very slowly. Last night at the launch it decided to quit for good and my unit is in the stuck down position.

1- I need to know how to manually release and raise the drive so I can trailer it to the shop.
2- The shop quoted about $200 for installing the rebuild kit (does this include solenoids?). Is this a good investment or should I be investing in an enteriely new unit? I will probably try keep the boat as long as possible...

Thanks

i think the trim section is in the drive manuals.
your right on the edge year wise and i have no reference materials to lead me one way or the other as to weather you've got a alpha1 genII or alpha1. but ya need either 6 or 14... my guess is 14 for genII drives... 6 would be alpha1's...

someone needs to confirm by s/n for you i think..

Make sure the pos and neg cables foor the trim pump are hooked up
go to the 2 solenoids conected buy a buss bar( copper connecting strip)
Blue motor wire is up, short across the 2 large lugs of the solenoid with the blue wire.
Worst case: remove the 2 hoses from the trim pump, drop a line around the trim tab, and pull the drive up. and tie off.Messy but works

The symptoms are a click of the solenoid for up, bu down still runs fine. I assume its a bad solenoid and not a power issue since its been a slow death. I did clean electrical connections and replaced battery cables because they were due just in case.

Will your first suggestion of jumping the up solenoid work if its bad?

Also for your Plan B which is removing the hoses - should I assume there will be some fluid produced when I raise the outdrive, do I need a catch pan? How hard will it be to lift - should I use a jack?

If the boats not in the water or in shallow water just knock the rear anchor pin out and let the rams float.

Re: Identify Outdrive - Service Manual - 4 Tilt\Trim

I used the jumper technique described by BT and pg 11 in the manual, worked like a charm - thanks. I wish I would have know that about 48hrs ago at the ramp ;) So does that narrow it down to a bad solenoid? Would a 'rebuild kit' include new solenoids?

Also when I replaced the battery cables I went with a marine grade 4G and realized the OEMs were 2G. Is 4G sufficient or should I take them back and get the 2G?

Re: Identify Outdrive - Service Manual - 4 Tilt\Trim

Update: Took to the shop awhile back and the results were less than desirable. They had to get alot of muk (prolly mixed fluids...) out of the lines, did a rebuild kit for the pump, and replaced the solenoid. Not happy with the cost\benefit of this as the pump still sounds terrible and its on borrowed time. The other fun thing is that the resevoir was cracked and you have to buy a whole new pump (I was told). We patched it with some adhesive temporarily, but lately its leaking like a sieve.

1- Is it possible to buy just the resevior? IIf so where? Is its feasible to just replace that\seals\gaskets\etc or is it much more involved and Im better buying a new\rebuild pump and being done with it?
2 - Cost of new pumps are out of my range and Im leaning towards a used \or rebuilt pump. Any reliable\reasonable sources for a rebuilt pump?

I still have no idea what you have. Your SN doesn't work on either a Alpha I o an Alpha I Gen II.
Motors for the trim pump can be bought seperate, but if the pump is bad, you won't like the price, even aftermarket.
There is a reservoir update kit available, but it's 450 bucks.
Better start looking for used.
Of course, you can get an aftermarket complete pump, motor, bracket, relays and wiring for around 650. Probably made by the same company.
Mercruiser does not make the trim pump units.
