Hi yall its been a long time but im back on the water again..(well almost lol)

i bought a boat (no motor) the controls look like a mercury but i never seen a plug like this.. can you tell me about it? what motors will it fit? the controls are mounted inside the walls of the boat and all that is showing is the "handle" the wires look new and cables look new too. so id like to see what year motors would work and if a marener motor would use the same plug??? thanks again....

Re: identifying controls??? help

The plug pictured is one for a Commander control that mates to a late 1980's Mercury motor with T/T. It is the same one I have on a 1987 70HP Merc. JMO

Re: identifying controls??? help

It could be done buy making a adapter to go from the newer commander control to the old Merc motor plugin style. Probably more trouble than what it's worth. Upgrading to a newer motor is best and can not hurt the value of the boating setup. The newer style plug you show is connected inside the motor cowling and the lose wires shown are for the tilt/trim of the motor. You can search around and might find a adapter that is already premade for your motor or get a newer motor cable harness plug and splice it on your existing motor harness also.

Re: identifying controls??? help

Those male plugs on the starboard side of the Merc's are from the early 80's and older. Depending on what kind of ignition you have, maybe you could buy a newer engine harness with the round plug. Alternatively, the wires will be compatible, so they could be grafted.
