I have a Evinrude 1996 115HP Model E115TLEDA. About to have some piston work done. Is this a 90 degree v4 cross-flow or a 60 degree loop-charged?

I think my no 1 piston may have burned up because of oil injection. How can I verify and/or make sure this is prevented after the piston is fixed?

Premix and make sure your fuel is getting clean to the carburettor (filters help).
Also replaced the top crank seal, its just a few coins

Oil injection failure would destroy more than 1 piston !-----Look for other causes of broken rings / cylinder damage.----Are you doing the work yourself ?------You can inspect your VRO pump, easy to do.-----You need to look at the entire OIL SYSTEM including hoses and filter in the tank.-----Run the factory test on the oil injection too.

I was thinking about pulling the head and bringing it to a shop to check, and replace piston. I brought it a few months back to a boat mechanic shop, and he said no 1 piston was bad. When I bought the bought a couple years ago the gentleman said that he just had the no 1 piston reworked. He was gonna charge $2800, but I just haven't been able to scrape that up.

I'm sure I can pull head if I follow clymer, and take pictures.

Factory manual is best to do a complete overhaul.-----Take your time and ask questions before using a hammer & chisel on that motor.

But hammer has always been my favorite tool. :) Where do I get the factory manual, and how much?

Piston work/replacement aside, is there any other reason for knowing whether one has a loop charged or cross-flow motor? Bear with me. I'm old.

I'm thinking one might be more susceptible to broken rings. Is that it, or are there other considerations?

Your #1 piston did not fail because of the oil injection. I would not replace just one piston because the other 3 are probably going to fail sooner than later. More than likely you broke a piston ring.

The V-4 crossflow has a simpler fuel system.-------The V-4 crossflow has a simpler ignition system----The gearcase on a crossflow has a lower ( sudden failure rate ) than the 60 degree looper.-------If you rebuild a V-4 crossflow properly it will be a sweet running.
