Can someone help me in identifying what unit I have?

Mercruiser I/O 470 1983. I have no idea which one I have but I guess this is pretty important to know. Where do I find some identification marking?

I am confused about changing the gear oil too. I expected to find a drain plug on the lower unit, but it doesn't appear to have one. How do I change the gear oil?

Also, I need to buy a new prop. Don't want to spend big bucks. Any suggestions/recommendations? The previous owner hit something and the prop has slight damage...

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Identifying drive/changing gear oil/replacing prop

If the engine and drive are actually 83, it would be an R drive, if it's actually an 82, it would be a 1 drive. Not uncommon to have 1 year older engine and drive in a boat because models change at different times.

There is a drain in the bottom of the drive, you just haven't found it yet. Go up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum, and download manual #6 for your outdrive.

We do have a prop forum here at iboats for prop questions and topics, but minor repairs at a prop shop is the cheapest way to go. Ask your local marine shop about one in your area, or where to ship them to.

Re: Identifying drive/changing gear oil/replacing prop

Looks like the unit is an R. On the nameplate, there is a 1, a 65, and a R. And then another serial number I suppose...

The prop is a 14" diameter, but there is absolutely no inscription on it, so I can't tell what the pitch is.

Thanks,
Dave
