I am installing a new lower shift cable in my mc1 outdrive. I removed the old cable and am going to install a new one. Two questions, first off where do these two plastic pieces go and do i need to replace them? Secondly i am looking through mercruiser manual #2 and thet list several drives, x drive, d-tr drive, ll-trs drive, direct drive, mrcruiser ll-tr/ll trs transmission section. My boat is a 1977 and my outdrive #1.84r. #4680382 and i need help identifyig the right lower shift cable adjustment section. Thanks

The small plastic grommet fits into the transom assembly from the inside of the boat where the shift cable goes through.

The long plastic tube? Not sure. Almost looks like the line up tube for the copper water tube to fit into the water pump.

The shift cable you are going to need is the one that fits an Alpha. Your may have been threaded in from the forward part of the bell housing, while the new cable threads into the section. If that is the case, you will need to tap the hole with a straight tap - NOT a tapered thread tap. I don't have the exact size in front of me, but do a search and it will come up.

What is the part number of the shift cable you purchased? that ratio should be for this motor CRUISER > 470 1976-1977 > 4208730 THRU 4893934
so using the latest shift cable for the GEN II drive will work. This is called a "aft entry" and you will need a special straight tap . 1/4 x 18 NPST

The correct adjustment procedure is in section 2-A, page 6 of the manual you're using. If you're viewing a PDF, then the 54th page in the PDF viewer...

The cable part number i have is 865436a02 quicksilver i do need to tap the bell housing so a tap is ordered. The small plastic gromet i will recycle as i cannot reach around the engine to get at it.
