S.N. OC159300 4 cylinder 40 hp.<br />Have adjusted the carb jets and checked the barrel adjustments on the cables. Motor will not idle and I am out of adjustment on the adjustment screw. I must be doing something wrong? Thanks

Re: Idle adjustment 40 hp merc.

Have you synchronized the throttle linkages & checked the timings at idle & WOT?If you dont do this you can cause alot of damage by running to much or too little advance.Get a manual it will tell you how to do this.Ill bet your motors timing is retarded too much at idle or your mixture screws are way out of adjustment.Once you have done the link & synch you need to adjust the idle mixtures with the engine running ingear in the water. You cant do this running on muffs as there is no back pressure on the exhaust(which is why the idle speed is faster on muffs than when its in the water)Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the help. Timing is fine but I was trying to adjust the idle mixture with a set of muffs. I put it in the water and adjusted the carb mixture and it came right in. Thanks again
